The short version
The Canobie was a wooden steamer of 259 feet, built in 1887. By 1921 she was in poor condition and was not lost to weather or accident. She was towed a short way east of Erie, burned, and scuttled, which was the ordinary end for a worn out wooden hull once she was no longer worth repairing. What is left of her sits in about 15 feet of water some three miles east northeast of the city, shallow enough to be a novice dive.
